Don’t let the flyover state reputation fool you, there are lots of fun things to see and do in Kansas, here are just a few of our favorites
Around Town
If you only do one extra thing, I highly recommend traveling 650 feet below ground to a museum made entirely of salt
The largest collection of US and Soviet spaceflight artifacts in the world, cool!
It’s tiny, but a great place to stretch your legs and get some fresh air
Wichita
Wichita is the biggest city in Kansas, which isn’t saying much, but there’s still a lot to do. Here’s a couple highlights
Wichita’s most iconic statue, right at the river confluence. Excellent spot for photos and a river walk
A lovely botanical garden, well worth a visit
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Allen House
Tour one of the famous prairie houses, it’s beautiful
Further afield
Make it a trip! Explore the prairie and Kansas history.
Day trip #1
Head north about an hour to discover the little town of Lindsborg, Coronado Heights, and Mushroom Rock State Park. If you’re in the mood for a hike, stop by Kanopolis State Park and try Horsethief Canyon trail.
Day trip #2
Explore the Flint Hills, Meghann’s favorite region in Kansas. The Tallgrass Prarie National Preserve is the largest expanse of tallgrass prairie left in the world, complete with a herd of bison. While you’re out there, tour the Chase County Courthouse, Spring Hill Ranch, and the lovely town of Council Grove.
Day trip #3
If you like quirky places, you must visit Lucas, known as the “Grassroots Art Capital of Kansas”. Stop by beautiful Wilson Lake, and tour a decommissioned cold war missile silo at Atlas Ad Astra on the way.
